Heading home for Christmas

Towards the end of my first term as a Bristol University student, the hype of the Christmas holidays had everyone missing home. However, with a few deadlines in the last week I didn’t have much time to get too excited for the break ahead.

For the past month or so, I have been working on the production of my first short film, which I created with two other people from my course. Although the project entailed a great time commitment, it was really great to work so independently and imaginatively, as I put many of my own ideas forward for the film. I found it very rewarding to watch the results of the hard work of the film students during a screening of all the short films created.

Among the long hours in the edit suites I did have time to have some fun at Christmas socials. Living in Northwell House means I was invited to the student houses Christmas formal, a festive event with a full three course Christmas dinner, jazz music and dancing- not to mention a lot of fancy frocks and suits! It was a really great way to round off first term and to kick start the Christmas holidays.

Although I am now used to and enjoy very much my routine as a student, during the last few weeks I was very ready to go home to see my family (also because I’d be able to have dinner cooked for me!). The first term is the longest and, for some people, the hardest as being away from home for so long is a big change. I made the decision to visit home a couple of times during term – I would recommend doing this if possible to break up the long time away as, for me, I found I missed the small comforts and familiarity of home.
