First Essay of the Year Handed In

I can’t believe I’ve managed to do so much in just a month of being back, even by music student standards!

I’ve just handed in my first essay of the year, which I always find nerve-wracking as I worry I’ve gone rusty over the summer. Is the field of aesthetics misogynist? Three thousand words later, I’ve gone with a resounding yes. I really enjoyed researching and writing this one, even if I did have to wade through everyone from Schoenberg to Sally Macarthur. Dr Annika Forkert, who runs the unit, is an expert on British musical modernism, and it’s thanks to her that I ended up using Elisabeth Lutyens’ O Saisons, O Chateaux as a case study, an ethereal, complex piece I have slightly fallen in love with.

BULB (the Bristol University Laptop Band), founded by myself and my tutor, Dr Kelcey Swain, has just had its second ever concert as part of the series of Friday lunchtime concerts put on at the Victoria Rooms, which was a success. I have also been elected as president of the Bristol University Composition, Arranging and Orchestration Society for this year, and besides putting on talks and workshops, we’ve just planned our big concerts for the term, which is all hugely exciting going forward.

Besides music, it’s been lovely to see all my friends again, although we’re all being boring and sensible in a way that our first-year selves would have been ashamed of!
