Celebrating Christmas in Theatre

There must be a word for being incredibly happy, excited and extremely busy and simultaneously ridiculously tired and ready for the end of term. The atmosphere in the last weeks of term is a buzz of exhaustion, joy and contentment. Friends have been made, final essays submitted and a well-deserved trip home to sample mum’s home cooked food (which will have never tasted so good) is around the corner. Bristol itself absolutely lights up with festivity with Park Street beaming and carols with complementary mince pies around every corner.

And there is nothing quite like a drama department to get one feeling thoroughly festive: we decorated the theatre in tacky (yet wonderful) tinsel and ornaments. Studiospace society went to The White Harte for Christmas dinner, with huge portions of chocolate cake and ridiculous Christmas jumpers. But the event was really made because of the friendships which have been formed between the first, second and third years. We get on so well and so it was a hugely entertaining, festive and raucous event. We drama students really know how to throw a Christmas bash.

On the work side of things, after attending the technical rehearsal of Swallows and Amazons at The Bristol Old Vic, we went to the press night. There was a wonderful atmosphere created by a truly magical production: a brilliant thing to feel part of.

The last deadline before Christmas was for the longest essay of the term but we were given a lot of support by tutors in seminars and individual sessions so it wasn’t too much of mountain to climb.

As for societies, I was lucky enough to be cast in the Studiospace production of Bronte which is showing in T2 theatre on 30th Jan. Come along if you happen to be in the area! It is beautifully written.

This term has gone by in a flash and I feel very lucky to be in such an incredibly friendly and vivacious university, the electric atmosphere of which is palpable. The Christmas break is very welcome, to rest and rejuvenate, but I’m looking forward to returning to see what next term has in store.

Have a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
