Settling into my first term at university
University is one of those things that I always knew was going to come around eventually but yet still felt like it was never going to happen; the weeks leading up to it are a strange mixture of fear and excitement. I knew I wanted to do the course; I’d been to two open days pre- and post-offer so was sure I was going to enjoy it; and the accommodation I’d chosen looked great from the pictures – although I hadn’t personally visited it so there was still the wonder about if it the description would match the reality.
Fortunately it did: there were a group of students there who helped carry all my stuff up to my flat and the flat itself was in great condition. Although after these few months the quality may have dwindled slightly! One of my biggest worries when I moved in was if I’d get on with my new flatmates. It’s a weird thing for anyone: you’re suddenly going to live with another five people who before that day you didn’t even know existed. It’s not one of those situations which occurs often. However we got to know each other really quickly: everyone’s in the same boat so there’s a lot less pressure on the conversation. Also it was quickly established we were claiming separate guys’ and girls’ bathrooms!
After the whole Freshers’ Week craze, where you mainly end up with a lot of new numbers for people you never bump into again, the course started. I think maybe my department broke us in a little bit more gently than some others: Film and TV doesn’t really have the same timetable intensity as the sciences and I loved it from the get-go.
I also found myself an amazing church in the first couple of weeks – something that was really important for me – and I’m having a great time with a load of awesome people there. I know I made the right choice coming to Bristol and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s to come.
